It was a case of the good life meeting a dog's life when animal-lovers met at the 137 High Street restaurant for a wine-tasting event last weekend.
The event, organised by Golden Award Wines, The Phoenix Dog Project and the SPCA, was to raise funds for Spay Day tomorrow.
It's an initiative of the Phoenix Dog Project, established by dog-lover Hannah Burbach.
Together with the SPCA, they aim to have spayed and neutered as many homeless dogs as possible this weekend.
“It's going to be a big thing,” Burbach beamed.
The project focuses on sterilisation on the basis that the fewer stray dogs there are, the fewer puppies will be born and – as Burbach points out – the fewer dogs will have to fight an everyday battle for survival on the streets.
“Any creature’s life should be worth living, deserving of happiness and the covering of basic needs,” Burbach said after Sunday's fundraiser.
A qualified vet removes the male dogs' testicles – which has the added benefit of lowering the risk of cancer.
The female dogs, the main focus of the campaign, have their ovaries removed.
A local vet performs the operations for the project at a reduced rate, with the support from the local SPCA.
Through donations from the public, the project is able to have the stray dogs housed and fed until they are well enough to be released.
Donations to the project go towards covering the costs of the operations.
The project funds other expenses such as petrol, leaflets, dog trap, food and donation boxes privately.
Donations can be made to 137 High Street Restaurant and Guesthouse from Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 2pm, as well as at Pick n Pay and Haricot's.
