The SPCA and the Phoenix Dog Project have appealed for support in their effort to tackle the problem of stray dogs.

They have asked Grahamstown residents to 'donate a spay' in their drive to have 50 female dogs spayed this weekend.

"The more people who donate, the more spay days we can have, which will in turn decrease the stray population," said SPCA vice-chairperson Karen Kouari this week.

"We are appealing for the community to donate R100 or more so we can try and curb the over-population of stray dogs in the township, who also roam the town streets.

"In six years, one female dog and her offspring could theoretically produce more than 67 000 dogs," Kouari said.

"The numbers speak for themselves. Without the communities' help, the problem will not go away."

The dogs will be spayed on Saturday and Sunday.

Counting the cost:

  • Average number of litters a fertile dog can produce yearly: 2
  • Average number of puppies per litter: 6-10
