Floodlights illuminate The Oval as loud cheers echo across Lavender Valley. It’s Wednesday night – a school night – yet young boys and girls hug the touchline, running up and down the field as they follow the flow of the game.

Some start a mini touch-rugby game in the corner, perhaps future stars who may battle it out on the rugby field in the future. Fans are boisterous as another try is scored.

Kitted in their maroon jerseys and white shorts, Wanderers are in the lead, dictating the play against Universals who are a mere three points behind with 15 minutes left to play.

Yet the Wanderers’ dominance in possession leads to two more quick tries, running out 27-12 victors.

The action on the field entertains the whole family as zig-zagging side steps, flying tackles and enthralling running rugby brings out the best in local sport, the players giving their all for Makana Mayoral Cup glory.

The enthusiasm increases as players jog down onto the field for the second game of the night between Old Collegians and Easterns.

In a very close encounter with limited scoring opportunities, Easterns manage to edge out their opponents 7-3, a match which has spectators biting their nails throughout.

Look out for more Mayoral Cup action this weekend at Miki Yili Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

At 2pm Easterns faces Wanderers on the A Field, while Winter Rose takes on Universals on the B Field. At 3.30pm Field A will see Swallows vs Brumbies and Lily White vs Old Collegians on the B Field.
