Police will be doing random searches at local clubs after a woman was raped following an evening with friends at a New Street club last week.

Spokesperson for the Grahamstown police Captain Mali Govender said detectives suspected the woman's drink had been spiked.

"The victim was in the company of friends at a club in New Street," Govender said.

"She cannot remember anything further as to what happened at the club."

"The following morning she awoke at her home with severe bruising on her body, strangulation marks on her neck and after a medical exam, it was discovered that she had also been raped. We believe that her drink may have been spiked. The suspect had possibly spiked her drink and took her to her house, where he sexually abused her."

Govender warned clubbers to be wary of leaving their drinks unattended.

"If you have any suspicion that your drink may have been spiked, have a urine test done as soon as possible to test for drugs," Govender advised.
