A 43-year-old man wanted for a string of car thefts in the nearby coastal towns was finally arrested with an accomplice in Nemato township last Friday.

Port Alfred police spokesperson Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula said the man is wanted for several similar cases in Alexandria, Kenton-on-Sea and Seafield.

The elusive car thief was tracked down soon after a resident in Southdowns, Port Alfred, reported he had just witnessed two men stealing his Opel Kadett at about 2am on Friday.

Mjekula said the man made a brief appearance in the Port Alfred Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a motor vehicle theft charge. The case was postponed for a formal bail application, leaving both men in custody.
