Philanthropist and former Grahamstown Citizen of the Year Mary Knowling died peacefully on Thursday morning.

"We are grateful to Somerset Place for their wonderful attentive care," said relative Jane Bradshaw, one of the close friends and family members who shared her last moments at 3.45am.

Knowling, 89, had spent her last two weeks in frail care at the complex after her health declined.

After nearly four decades of work as a family doctor, Knowling closed her busy practice and worked in the public sector at Fort England psychiatric hospital.

In 2001 she was named Grahamstown's Rotary Citizen of the Year. Her welfare work included the Grahamstown and District Relief Association (Gadra), Eluxolweni Children's Shelter and the SPCA.

Grocott's Mail will publish an obituary in a future edition.
