A heavy storm on Tuesday night damaged the main power station of Makana's electricity deparment which caused a three hour long power outage in large parts of the town.

Technical and Infrastructure services director Thembinkosi Myalato told Grocott's Mail that this was caused by the storm and lightning on Tuesday night.

"We fixed it by doing a temporary connection, but this was beyond our control as storms are an act of God. The excessive wind and lightning damaged our main power station but we are busy fixing that," he said.

The power outage happened just after 8PM on Tuesday night and, according to Myalato, the power was restored within three hours.

He also mentioned that the would be no water in the Grahamstown east area as the pipeline from the James Kleinhans Scheme feeding to Bordershill reservoir was vandalised last night.

"All the areas which are supplied by the Bodershill will not have water until maybe tommorrow [Thursday], we are busy fixing the problem today, the pipes were vandalised," he said.

Myalato was not sure exactly when the water would be restored tommorow, but said he expects the problem to be fixed.
