Despite the fact that Fingo Village residents had handed over a petition to the magistrate urging him not to grant bail to two young men who were initially accused of the "brutal rape" and attempted murder of a 23-year-old woman, the pair were released on warning in the Grahamstown magistrates court this week.

Despite the fact that Fingo Village residents had handed over a petition to the magistrate urging him not to grant bail to two young men who were initially accused of the "brutal rape" and attempted murder of a 23-year-old woman, the pair were released on warning in the Grahamstown magistrates court this week.

Asked by state prosecutor Asanda Koliti why he had opted not to oppose the two men's bail application Manzana said they did not have a strong enough prima facie case against the accused.

Koliti told the court that the state had withdrawn the rape charge because they had not received confirmation that the victim had indeed been raped.

The men still face charges of attempted murder and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
