In the days leading up to the Eastern Cape's top cycle race Grahamstown’s cycling club, Saints & Sinners, will host a coaching clinic. As cyclists prepare for The Herald VW Cycle Tour taking place in Port Elizabeth on Sunday, 3 February the local cycling club is offering some much-needed tips for the big day. The meeting will take place at the Highlander on Worcester Street on Tuesday, 29 February and is open to club members, but committee member Adam Smith said any newcomers are welcome to sign up on the night. The clinic starts at 6pm and is scheduled to last about an hour. Smith said club coaches and other experienced cyclists at the clinic will focus on what newbies can expect and how they can prepare for their first race, among other things. “It’s often the simple practical details which can make a big difference and keep you calm on the day,” he said. Two days before the clinic the club will host a road cycle ride in preparation for The Herald on Sunday, 27 January. See the Hi-Q Sports Diary below for more details. Organisers of The Herald VW Cycle Tour have promised to deliver yet another action-packed, family-oriented festival of cycling and entertainment when the 28th edition of the event rolls out in Nelson Mandela Bay from 1-3 February. The programme starts on the Friday with an all-day expo and registration (9am-9pm) on the exhibition level of The Boardwalk International Convention Centre opposite Hobie Beach. Then on the Saturday morning the racing kicks off with the mountain bike events in Addo and family road events in Port Elizabeth. The weekend culminates with the feature races and prize-giving at the beachfront on Sunday. According to event coordinator Linda Harwood riders may collect their goodie bags and comprehensive race booklet at registration. Harwood said the race village near the start/finish at Hobie Beach would host the weekend’s festivities, with various food and refreshment vendors, a spectator tent and the Coca-Cola Waya-Waya mobile music truck adding to the atmosphere.
