A 57-year-old man was arrested carrying 36.4kg loose abalone on his way to Grahamstown from Port Elizabeth, according to a statement by SAPS spokesperson Mali Govender.

Members of the Grahamstown Highway patrol were conducting a vehicle check point on the N2 when they stopped a green convertible Mazda MX5 driving towards Grahamstown from Port Elizabeth.

"On conducting a search of the vehicle, they found the abalone packed in cooler boxes and bags amid clothing and vegetables," says Govender. "The price of abalone varies and can be sold of up to R450 per kg."

The suspect who was detained at Grahamstown will appear in the local magistrate’s court on a charge of possession of abalone at a later date.
