Grahamstown teachers held a lunch-time protest against the provincial education department on Friday.

Despite threats to strike by members of the South African Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) when Eastern Cape schools reopened this year, this is the only action that has been taken – so far.

Sadtu accused the provincial education department of destabilising and disrupting schools by terminating contracts for temporary teachers and not paying them their salaries.

According to Sadtu, some teachers have been shocked to receive SMSes from the department instructing them to move to other schools after being unlawfully classified as "excess educators".

Provincial Sadtu secretary Mncekeleli Ndongeni said should the need arise they would prepare their entire membership for more serious action.
