Police arrested two men along the N2 with 16kg of dagga during a vehicle search operation near the Settlers' Monument on Thursday, 10 January.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said two men aged 30 and 20 were arrested by the Grahamstown Highway Patrol members conducting a vehicle check operation.

Govender said the team stopped and searched the white Toyota Quantum with a trailer travelling in the Port Elizabeth direction around 3pm. All passengers were asked to stand with their bags, but two bags were left unattended.

"The driver had no knowledge who the bags belonged to, but two passengers assisted the police and pointed out who the owners of the bags were," Govender said.

The bags contained dagga with a street value of approximately R16 000. The suspects were travelling from Mthatha to George.

Both men appeared in the Grahamstown Magistrate's Court on Monday, 14 January.
