Holiday sport at a glance

The annual Boxing Day fun run/walk, hosted by Kowie Striders in Port Alfred, takes place on Boxing Day this Wednesday. There are a 5km and 8km fun run/walk and organisers are expecting around 750 participants.

The annual Boxing Day fun run/walk, hosted by Kowie Striders in Port Alfred, takes place on Boxing Day this Wednesday. There are a 5km and 8km fun run/walk and organisers are expecting around 750 participants.

Every finisher will each receive a goodie bag. Registration for the fun run/walk opens from 3pm and the race starts at 5pm, all from the Port Alfred Country Club. This year's fun run/walk has the theme “Christmas” and there will be a prize for the best dressed, according to the theme.

The first Kowie River Mile (1.6km) takes place on Sunday 30 December and will start at the jetty alongside the Ndlambe Tourism Office in Port Alfred. Categories include men's, women's, scholars and disabled (800m). Teams can also enter. Entry cost is R150 per adult and R100 per scholar. Late entries on the day will cost R200 per person. All proceeds to go towards Sunshine Coast Hospice.

Also a first is the Nelson Mandela Bay Mile Ocean Swim (1.6km) which takes place on Monday 31 December. The event will take participants between King's Beach and Humewood Beach (one-way swim). One can register online or on the morning at King's Beach between 7am and 8.30am. Race-briefing and participant-numbering at King's Beach and then all participants will walk to Humewood Beach for the start. Entry costs R80 for pre-entries, R100 on the day. In January the Grahamstown Schools’ Cricket Festival takes place from Thursday 10 to Saturday 14 January. A total of 14 schools' first-teams from around the country will be taking part.
