Both beating Graeme College in the earlier games of the seventh annual Shaw/Brown 20/20 triangular cricket tournament, St Andrew’s and Kingswood Colleges went directly into the tournament final on Saturday.

The match of the tournament was played under floodlights on Kingswood’s City Lords field where St Andrew’s won the toss and elected to bat first.

The visitors claimed a massive 182 runs for only three wickets after a rocky start. They lost two early wickets, standing on only two runs for two wickets at one stage.

Kingswood’s opening bowlers did well to put pressure on the St Andrew’s batsmen and Anelisa Mteto bowled particularly well up front, getting the ball in good places as he frustrated the visiting batsmen.

St Andrew’s player Mbulelo Mama was brought to the crease after the first two wickets fell, batting aggressively as he made a quick 58 runs before being dismissed. It was then Greg King (78 not out) and Charles Byron (36 not out) who helped the St Andrew’s side to their dependable total.

During their turn to bat, Kingswood batsmen played well with Matthew Thorp hitting regular fours as he went on to make 48 runs. Mama shone again for St Andrew’s, but this time with the ball in hand as he took three wickets for 38 runs. Murray Leith took two for 27 as Kingswood made 148/9 in their 20 overs.

After his team won the Shaw/Brown Trophy for 2012, St Andrew’s director of cricket Carl Bradfield described the final match as a good, entertaining game of 20/20 cricket.

Mama went on to win the Player of the Day award for his fine all-round performances.

The Shaw/Brown tournament was initially introduced to recognise the valuable contribution that former Kingswood staff members Bob Shaw and Peter Brown had made, not only to Kingswood cricket but to schoolboy cricket in Grahamstown.
