The Miss Makana beauty pageant plans to make a spectacular comeback to the Grahamstown social calendar next month. After missing the spotlight for a few years, the event organised by Ikhaya Promotions promises a showcase of beautiful and talented girls. There will also be an after party to raise funds for orphanages in Makana.

Ikhaya Promotions marketing officer Bongani Biko says they have booked the City Hall on 6 December for the pageant. The exciting line up of entertainment for the night includes the pageant and talent show for 16 to 24-year-old participants, gospel and hip hop music as well as a variety of dance performances.

Biko said the pageant hasn't taken place for at least the past three years, but this year they are going to give Makana residents royal treatment.

Text messages have been sent out to prospective participants to collect entry forms from the Egazini Arts Centre in Joza and others who'd like to take part in the pageant are invited to collect entry forms as soon as possible.

Biko said negotiations with sponsors were still underway, but he is confident that the sponsors they have approached would come on board. We have even approached past winners to assist not only in crowning the new Miss Makana, but to assist in marketing the event, Biko said.

But the show is about more than just beautiful girls. Biko said they want to host an after party where money raised from the cover charge can be donated to local orphanages, because it is important to give back to the community.

Event organisers say the pageant hopes to find a motivated young person who will be able to educate others about HIV/Aids and other issues that need attention within Makana municipality.

Biko says they also intend to take [[young people/ the pageant participants]] on a tour around different municipal departments to familiarise them with what municipal officials do for citizens and to give them an opportunity to explore different career options in local government.
