Last weekend the festival saw St Andrew’s, Kingswood, Nombulelo Secondary and Grey High, from Port Elizabeth, compete at the Kingswood College High Performance Centre.
A thrilling encounter of competitive basketball was displayed by all the teams involved, with games starting last Friday and the ending on Sunday.
St Andrew’s finished tops with fine wins in all their games. They finished with 15 points, followed by Grey with 9, Kingswood with 3 and Nombulelo High also 3.
Festival organiser Xolani Jonono said the initial plan was to include schools from Johannesburg and Cape Town. However, due to the bad weather conditions and road damage across the country, he said the non-Eastern Cape schools had pulled out.
Jonono explained that the tournament was intended to gauge the local players’ level of skill against other schools. It is planned that the festival will become a yearly event and the next time they host it, Jonono said, hopefully the EC schools will then be able to gauge their level of play against other provinces.
The first St Andrew’s basketball festival took place in 2010.
