Motorists needing to drive between Grahamstown and PE can bypass the sinkhole on the N2 by taking a route via the Alicedale road, which will add only 20 minutes to the normal N2 journey time and eliminate the need to go via Kenton-on-Sea.

The road is a gravel road and it has some potholes and some muddy places, but it is not impassable in the dry. However caution should be observed when driving on this road, and it would not be suitable for vehicles with low ground clearance or drivers who like speeding.

When I checked this road today, the vehicles which were using it were Opel Corsas (both sedan and bakkie) Chevrolet Aveo, VW Polo, A Renault and various bakkies.

Explanation of route:

If travelling from Grahamstown to PE: 

Travel along the N2 until the Alicedale turn-off (point 1 on map). Turn RIGHT off the N2 towards Alicedale, and drive 8.7 km to the Paterson turn-off.

At the Paterson turn-off (pictured left and point 2 on map), turn left to Paterson. Drive 2.7 km to the T-junction (point 3 on map.)
At the T-Junction (pictured left and point 3 on map), turn left towards Seven Fountains and the N2. Drive 3.6Km to the N2 (point 4 on map). Turn right onto N2 and continue towards PE.
