Imagine losing everything you own because of a flood or natural disaster. In 1996 my home in Wilderness was destroyed in an overnight flash flood. One of the only material survivors of this episode was a blue Toyota Conquest (and a library book in the boot!) but our entire home, all our cameras, photographs and a lifetime of memories went to sea.

Earlier this week, while chatting to a woman who had just lost her home in Port Alfred, I mentioned that I could relate. Sadly, there are many who have been struck by disaster and left with nothing but the clothes on their backs. You can help them.

Grocott’s Mail would like to make an appeal to all those in and around the Grahamstown area to make donations of food, clothes or toiletries to those who have been affected by flood and storm damage. You can drop off your donations at the Grocott’s Mail offices at 40 High Street.

Items will be distributed to those in need. Local businesses are also being encouraged to get involved. For more information email me at sarah@grocotts.co.za or phone 046 622 7222. Follow our Grocott’s Mail Online Facebook page for news about our roads as well to monitor what donations have been received.
