In preparation for last weekend's Cacadu Amateur Boxing tournament held in Kirkwood, Grahamstown boxers were hyping themselves up weeks in advance. Local amateurs met at the Joza Indoor Sport Centre on Saturday 13 October to show off their skills in the Mfuzo Boxing Camp trials.
In preparation for last weekend's Cacadu Amateur Boxing tournament held in Kirkwood, Grahamstown boxers were hyping themselves up weeks in advance. Local amateurs met at the Joza Indoor Sport Centre on Saturday 13 October to show off their skills in the Mfuzo Boxing Camp trials.
The trials were well attended by members of Mfuzo, Mayfield, Motherwell, Inkuthazo and Masibambane boxing clubs, as well as boxing supporters and veterans of the sport.
Grahamstown professional boxer and Mfuzo secretary Masonwabe Mgcuwe said the tournament was held to test the readiness of competitors for the Cacadu tournament.
Masibambane coach Bulelani Ndwayana had addressed the packed hall, saying that everyone had given good performances but that boxing was about more than just what goes on in the ring. Ndwayana said boxers needed to show respect, dignity and passion for their sport.
Among the winners at the local trials was Zikhona Skeyi, Eastern Cape Boxing Organisation gold medallist, who said that she trains very hard to maintain her high standard. I won't stop till I become a professional boxer, she said.
A team was then selected from the trials, which went on to last weekend's Kirkwood tournament hosted by the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture. See full report on the Kirkwood tournament in Friday's Grocott's Mail.
