To spread the wealth of the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) more evenly and to target less developed areas the National Lotteries Board is setting up help desks across the country.

Aiming to help less equipped and more rural communities in South Africa to access lottery funding, the board wants to ensure that at least 5% of lottery funds are disbursed to each province, according to a press statement released last week.

The 2011/2012 annual report of the lottery trust shows that three of the nine provinces didn't make the minimum 5%. They were Northern Cape (1.9%), North West (4.5%) and Mpumalanga (4.8%). The Free State received just over 5% of the NLDTF budget.

Help desks have been set up in the poorer resourced provinces where lottery board staff will assist prospective and previously declined applicants to better understand the funding requirements. Details of the venues and times when the various help desks can be found are on the opening page of the National Lottery Board website. Alternatively one can call 086 006 5383.

The department of sport and recreation's call for funding applications closes on 2 November and applicants are urged to submit their fully completed applications as early as possible. The call for charities' applications opened this Sunday and only applications that include all mandatory documents will be considered.
