The Grahamstown chapter of non-governmental organisation Round Table hopes to raise R40 000 for National Bandana Day this Friday.

“To reach our target, we need to sell 2 000 bandanas before and on Bandana Day,” said Grahamstown Round Table spokesperson Mynhardt van Dyk.

Sunflower Bandanas are sold through all Pick n Pay branches for R20 each.

Bandana Day is a country-wide programme started by the Sunflower Fund in 1999 that aims to raise money to build a registry of bone marrow stem cell donors for leukaemia sufferers.

The Sunflower Fund aims to get at least 100 000 donors on the registry, which currently has just over 64 000 registered members.

“It only takes two teaspoons of blood to become a donor but it can cost R1 000 to match tissue which is why we raise funds to help pay for these tests,” van Dyk explained.

“Everyone is then encouraged to wear bandanas to school, work, university and sports clubs on 12 October to show support for children suffering with leukaemia,” he said.
