The Bushman Sands Golf Club in Alicedale will be hosting a Golf Day on 27 October to raise funds and awareness for PAWS (People helping animals). Proceeds from this day will go to Indalo – the Association of Eastern Cape Private Nature Reserves.

The format of play is a Betterball Stableford.

From 2000 to 2007, an average of 15 rhino were poached every year in South Africa. In 2008 this figure rose to 83 and in 2009 the figure rose to 123. In 2010 there were 333 rhino killed and in 2011, 448 rhino were poached throughout SA. Up to 25 July 2012, 281 rhino have been slaughtered.

At this rate, we stand to lose more than 500 rhino to poaching in South Africa by the end of the year. Unless this slaughter is stopped, or at the very least slowed, these magnificent animals may no longer be around for us, or certainly for future generations, to enjoy.

There are many courageous and dedicated people who are working tirelessly to preserve our heritage in order that these creatures remain for all to enjoy.

As with all projects of this nature, a huge amount of funding is required in order to ensure that the men and women on the front line, protecting wildlife and investigating poaching, are adequately supplied with the resources required to carry out their tasks effectively. The golf day has been organised to raise funds for this worthy cause.

The cost is R800 per four ball (R200 per individual) and includes a meal after the prizegiving/auction.

The founder of PAWS, Gavin de Lange, said: “We are pleading with all businesses and individuals to support us in our efforts to raise as much as we can.” De Lange said their target from the golf day and auction is R50 000.

“Sponsorship of greens, tees, etc is most welcome,” added De Lange.

“It’s in our hands. Let’s do what we can, while there’s still time,” concluded De Lange
