Since the beginning of the year, St Andrew's Preparatory School has made the rhinoceros a central figure for 2012. Last Friday marked the end of their rhino campaign and it all came to a highly successful climax.
Through fundraisers like civvies days, silent auctions and their main online rhino art auction, the prep school managed to raise R22 956 to donate to the Kariega Foundation. “All I can think of saying is a huge thank you, boys and girls!” said Kariega general manager Alan Weyer.
“You've helped raise a terrific amount of money and have spread worldwide awareness of this threat that is getting worse and worse.” Weyer explained that the reserve is currently raising money to put radio collars on their rhino so they can better monitor their locations.
The money raised by the school will cover the cost of three collars. The online auction organised by St Andrew's Prep art teacher Sasha Scholtz raised a whopping R18 000 and Wilson was one of the pupils who had his work chosen for the gallery.
“You mustn't stop spreading the awareness,” said St Andrew's Preparatory School Headmaster Gareth Allman. “This cheque is all possible because of you boys and girls. Well done!”
