Grahamstown's Eastern Cape welterweight boxing champion, Mzoxolo Ndwayana, won his battle by knockout in round eight when he beat Gerald Nekhubvi at the Orient Theatre in East London on Sunday.

The local professional boxer, Mzoxolo, won the provincial title late last year. Everyone was very shocked when I knocked down my opponent in round eight, said Ndwayana, excited. The champ had made it clear during round eight that Nekhubvi was not coming back into the fight when he knocked him down twice in the same round and the referee had to stop the fight.

Ndwayana admitted that the fight had been a tough one. The fight was a WBO intercontinental elimination bout, organised by Eyethu Boxing Promotion. His father and coach, Bulelani Ndwayana, overwhelmed with pride, said the fight had not been easy because Nekhubvi was a strong opponent. "He knocked us (Mzoxolo) down in the first round, but we came back to take him down too on the second round," he said.

Mzoxolo is ranked sixth in SA in the welterweight division. "We are close to the South African title and with this energy we can also challenge the title match," he said. "Everyone who was there can tell that we are ready for the title fight. We have shaken the walls of the Orient theatre."
