One resident, Glynn Moody, has been struggling to get out of his property for weeks because of the water flowing out next to his house. He told italGrocott's Mail/ital on Tuesday that he had phoned and gone to the municipality on several occasions over the past month to report the problem, but it is yet to be fixed.
I have been complaining to the Makana Municipality about his leaking meter box next to the Youth Amusement Centre and they keep on making empty promises, Moody said. He added that he isn't the only one with a leaking water meter, and a number of other residents are being bothered by this too, but they have given up.
Who is going to pay the water bill? he asked about the meter that leaks constantly. He approached his ward councillor, Lena May, who told him that his meter would be fixed on that day (Tuesday). And that was a lie because this meter is still leaking now, Moody said.
He reminded ward councillors that they should do their jobs properly because they must face their people in the next elections. May confirmed that she had said the leaking meter would be fixed on Tuesday, but because of the rain she said municipal workers couldn't perform the job.
I am so devastated about this matter, she said, adding that it would be attended to as soon as the weather cleared up or by next week. May said she had also reported the matter at a council meeting.
Moody complained that when white people raise issues with the municipality, their problems are seen to much more quickly than black people's. I wonder who will vote for people who don't care for our rights to service delivery, he said.
