Two men were bust with over R4 million worth of dagga in a van just outside of Port Alfred this week, after a police man and his dog smelled a rat.
Warrant officer Mark Neave was out on patrol on Tuesday morning when he spotted a white delivery vehicle travelling very slowly up a hill. Grahamstown police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender told Grocott's Mail that Neave had decided to stop the vehicle and its two occupants.
His dog, Toska, immediately indicated that there was something suspicious in the vehicle, despite there being strong-smelling toilet deodorant blocks spread around the back to camouflage any smells.
Searching the van revealed that it was packed with 50kg sacks of dagga, Govender said. Neave immediately called for back-up and both men were arrested. The vehicle was driven to the Port Alfred police station where the van's contents were emptied and a total of 81 sacks of dagga were counted.
Together they weighed nearly four tons. The estimated street value of the dagga is over R4 million, Govender said. Both men are currently in custody and face charges of possessing dagga. They will appear in the Port Alfred Magistrate's Court this week, according to Govender.
