Graeme College's top 12 tennis players recently returned from a 10-day trip to Mauritius during which they played a series of friendly matches against clubs.

In the four-day tournament consisting of both doubles and singles games, Graeme did very well and won three out of the four match days. Deputy head boy and vice captain of the tennis team Jared Coetzee said the experience had been amazing for him and his teammates.

When the boys weren't playing or practising for matches, they were able to go for walks on beautiful beaches, go snorkelling, sail on a catamaran and see the waterfront in Port Louis, he told Grocott's Mail.

"We ended up seeing the real part of Mauritius, the really poor side and we got to see the fancy side as well," he said. "The people in Mauritius mostly speak French and they are very friendly and hard-working. It is a really great place to have a holiday. It was an amazing experience to see the different islands and the beaches," Coetzee said.

Plans for the tour were set in motion last year already by coach Hanlie van der Meulen, who thought it would be a great experience for the boys. School master in charge of sport Nico van der Meulen was also involved with arranging the tour and also went along.

Graeme College covered most of the expenses for the trip, but the tennis team contributed to covering their expenses by selling boerewors rolls at Rugby Day, holding frequent cake sales and other duties to earn their keep.
