Cape Town-based comedians Martin Evans and Rob van Vuuren (better known as Twakkie from SABC 2's The Most Amazing Show) promise a feisty comedic performance at this year's National Arts Festival with their new show, Pants on Fire!

Having both won Standard Bank Ovation awards for their individual performances last year, their new collaboration is set to have audiences screaming with laughter.

Drawing on some of the best names in the local entertainment industry, the twosome are set to light up the late night scene for the duration of Festival with the likes of Chris Chameleon, Andrew Buckland, Arno Carstens, Siv Ngesi and Stuart Taylor to name a few.

The comedy heavyweights plan to deliver things like short sketches and mock interviews with their guests, with all the trappings of a distinctively mind-boggling and 'refined' performance that audiences have come to expect from the duo.

Evans told Grocott's Mail in an email interview that he sees the Festival as a time when creativity runs high and he and his stage compatriots are forced to feed off each other. He emphasised that each show will be different, with no script in sight.

Grahamstown holds special significance for Evans, who believes the Grahamstown Festival to be a convergence of the greatest national talents.

“No other festival in South Africa comes close for me,” he said. “It is the quintessential performance experience in the country. The camaraderie and union among [performers]is amazing.”

Having performed at several other large festivals, Evans is no stranger to the National Arts Festival and appreciates the way it allows actors and comedians to perform in a far more personal and intimate space.

Van Vuuren, famous for being one half of the mischievous Corné and Twakkie pair, said that people coming to see their show should “think of it as the eye of the storm, a late night comedown comedy café complete with bar and restaurant, serving platefuls of belly laughs and side-orders of the bizarre and beautiful”.

Pants on Fire! is showing at 10pm every night during Festival in the Princess Alice Hall.
