With the constant litany of gloom and compliants, it's easy to overlook the fact that a fair number of people are competent and take pride in their work. Here's an example: Someone jumped over my garden fence (since substantially reinforced) and stole my bicycle while I was out of town. My wife reported it to the police and second-hand shops around town.

Two weeks later, the police phoned and invited us to identify a bicycle fitting the description at a second hand shop. It turned out to be mine, and the police are investigating further.

Well done to the police, who demonstrated that at least some of them believe in doing the job they are paid to do. Not so well done the second-hand shop, who phoned us 20 minutes after the police did, suggesting they may have a bicycle similar to mine.
