The Makana Arts Council marked Youth Day on Saturday with a celebration of hip hop, poetry, drama and kwaito music at an event at Market Square on Dr Jacob Zuma Drive on Saturday.

Organiser Ayanda Nondlwana, of the Makana Arts Council, introduced the event with a brief history of the June 16 1976 Soweto Uprising.

What are we doing in our time to make a better life for the upcoming generation? he asked.

The event also served as a way of monitoring the work of local performers ahead of the National Arts Festival, Nondlwana said. We want to know who our artists are, Nondlwana said.

Performers registered and the event kicked off.

Kwaito singer Siyanda Futhufuthu performed from his album, Inzame, and had the audience dancing and shouting in his praise.

Ntsikelelo Spliff Xhalabile took to the stage with an enthusiastic hip-hop number that is due to be released in August. He got the crowd clapping hands and singing with him.

Via Kasi Movers took to the stage with their Aluta Continua – a production about black people's struggles.
