The Makana Art Council (MAC) is targeting Youth Day, tomorrow, to revive the spirit of art and selflessness in the community and to rally together against piracy.
These important points were discussed at an open meeting at the Duna Library on Wednesday. Local artists gathered at the meeting and planned how they intended to work with the community and government officials in their quest.
MAC acting vice chair Thandazile Madinda briefly explained how they will implement their June 16 event. Besides giving back to the community when individuals have something to give, he said, We all have to take responsibility and [do things like]clean our clinics and Themba TB Hospital on June 16.
Madinda added that they will then go to Dr Jacob Zuma Drive's market square and host performances by groups that are going to appear on the National Arts Festival's Fringe programme. The event will also offer an opportunity for up-and-coming musicians to show their stuff to the community with an open mic session.
MAC acting organiser Milile Mentyisi spoke about piracy in Makana, saying how sad it was that it prevents local artists from making money from their music. "It is not good to work on a album for [a long time]and then watch people selling it with a cheap price on the street," he said. Mentyisi suggested that they should organise an anti-piracy protest sometime during the Arts Festival.
"It's when all officials, residents and artists can see that we are not playing when we say that piracy is corruption and fraud on its own level."
After the meeting, local kwaito artist Siyanda Futhufuthu said he had almost lost his faith in the Arts Council, but now he is very happy about its revival.
"I like the idea of bringing service to the community and that we will clean clinics and Themba Hospital on 16 June," he said. He appealed the community to support local talent and also encouraged the meeting's participants to all attend tomorrow's event.
