A young man performing maintenance work on a phone network tower plummeted to his death on a farm in the area this week.

Grahamstown police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender reported that Reginald Cloete, 25, was working on the 25 metre high structure on Monday afternoon.

Part of the phone tower on Stillewater farm, at Boknesstrand in the Alexandria district, allegedly broke off while Cloete was working on it. An ambulance was called to the scene, but upon its arrival Cloete was declared dead.

Cloete is from Cape Town and is believed to have been part of a team working on the project when the incident happened. An inquest docket has been opened and is being investigated by the Alexandria police.
