The news that Fufu had been killed while hitch-hiking to her graduation ceremony from Port Elizabeth on 12 April shocked the university and the Grahamstown community.
In honour of her, Rhodes has invited staff and students to contribute towards a memorial prize which will be awarded annually, at graduation, to a student graduating in science with a BSc or BSc (Hons) who has overcome educational hardships to achieve very good results.
Dean of Science, Professor Ric Bernard, said preference would be given to a student who had come through the Foundation Programme and who had majored in the mathematical or statistical sciences. "Where there are suitable recipients at both BSc and BSc (Hons) levels, two awards may be made,” Bernard said.
According to a press release issued by the Rhodes Communications and Marketing Division, donations can be made at student fees, either in Eden Grove or the main administration building, for account number 60414 769 172. All bone-fide donations will result in a Section 18A tax certificate.
