The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) has issued a statement indicating its willingness to fight for its demands submitted to the South African Local Government Association (Salga) for the 2012/13 financial year.
The demands include an across-the-board increase of 15% or R2 000, whichever is the greater, and a minimum wage of R6 000.

Samwu, representing 230 000 workers across the country, says their demands stem from the failure to conclude a collective agreement with Salga last year. Their statement, issued on Wednesday, said, Municipal workers continue to suffer from the effects of soaring petrol and energy costs. Employed workers have to shoulder the burden of unemployed family members, as the State has failed to provide any meaningful unemployed benefits for the millions of unemployed in this country.
