Rhodes University Archers took home 10 medals from the South African National Archery Championships on the Rhodes Great Field last week.

Rhodes archers who took part were Lance Ho, Simon Naude, Ettione Ferreira, Catherine Linklator, Kevin Lobb, Stuart Bodman, Anton-Pierre Swart and Leanne Poole.

In last Thursday's Fita round, Swart took gold in the Compound Men's Open and Linklater took bronze in the Standard Bow Cadet category. Poole finished 10th in the Compound Women and Lobb took sixth spot in the Recurve Men.

In the Compound Men Individual Eliminations, Bodman lost against number one-ranked Petrus Marx, from North Gauteng, by a single point. Bodman placed 11th. Swart dominated his eliminations matches to win gold in his category. Ho (11th) was to eliminate against Thys van Niekerk (6th) from the Western Province.

At the end of the match, Ho cause a surprising upset by eliminating the talented Western Province archer 142-140. Ho and Naude were in the 2011 Universiade team that competed in China. In the quarter finals, Ho faced Marx. Ho lost 139-144, ending 7th in his section.

In the Recurve Men, Lobb placed 6th. Poole finished 7th in the Compound women. In the Standard Bow Cadet, Linklator lost the gold medal match, finishing second in her section. In the Team Eliminations, Bodman, Ho and Naude represented EP in the Provincial Compound Men’s Team. The EP side won bronze.

In the Provincial Mixed Team, Ho and Poole represented EP. In their first match, EP beat number one-ranked Western Province to make the finals. The EP mixed team faced Namibia for gold. With accurate shooting, the Namibians won 148-136 and EP won the silver.

The South African National Archery Association (Sanaa) Olympic Commission used the champs to identify and nurture talent to represent South Africa at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
