The South African Police Service's (SAPS) Robbery Squad received warm words of gratitude from a local security company, Copper Eagles, yesterday.

The company's co-owner, Edward Preston, said that on Friday last week there was an armed robbery in Joza Location at around 10am. Three suspects, one armed with a firearm, robbed Welcome Cash and Carry in Extension 6, Joza.

“We contacted the robbery squad and they were there in three minutes,” he explained. Preston said the shop owner went through the suspect profile book and identified one suspect. “The squad worked throughout the night and apprehended the three suspects, and one firearm was recovered,” said Preston. He said one suspect was already out on bail, and has five pending cases against him, including a robbery charge.

He also commended the swift moves of the squad during the armed robbery that took place in High Street on Friday evening. At Fishaways, four men entered and threatened the shop's staff at gun point, demanding money and cellphones. He said the suspects were apprehended, and two of them are from Port Elizabeth while the other two are from Grahamstown.

“We would like to thank them for their dedication, and for going beyond the call of duty,” said Preston. He said his company works very closely with the squad and they meet on the daily basis to discuss cases. “Without the seven members of the robbery squad, crime will skyrocket in Grahamstown,” he concluded.
