Festivities began early on Saturday morning as St Patrick’s Day dawned bright and green in Grahamstown. The House of Pirates were first to the worm, opening their doors as early as 8am and a collection of stoic people opened their accounts in the chilly morning air.

The day’s atmosphere slowly reached boiling point at the Rat and Parrot as flocks of people dressed in their St. Paddy’s finest came to join in the celebrations. The outfits were a combination of inspirational and just plain ridiculous.
Needless to say, green paint and confectionery were thrown around with reckless abandon and the crowd at the Rat added chanting and singing to their list of celebratory feats. Champs Action Bar kicked things off nicely at noon, and while the festivity was apparent, this was definitely the place to be for a more relaxed time, no hooliganism occurring within its hallowed walls.
Prime and Friar Tuck’s scooped up those who wandered too far from the Rat, and were definitely the ideal choice for the dance-floor lovers out there. Many other spots around town threw their lot in with the Irish, and those who chose to participate clearly had a wonderful evening of colour, dress-up and Guinness.
