The shoot-out took place outside the new Fishaways shop, after the three men – one of whom had a gun – demanded the staff to give them money and their cellphones.
Fishaways manager, Kudzai Chatikobo said the heist took place just before 10pm when a man entered the shop and asked the cashiers what was for sale. As the cashier was answering him, a second man came in and produced a gun which he pointed at the staff.
"Soon after that a third guy came in and they ordered all of us to lie down," Chatikobo said. The cashiers were ordered to open the tills, while the man with the gun kept watch as the other two men took the cash.
As they left, Chatikobo said a police van happened to be passing by, and they must have noticed that something was happening at the shop because they reversed the van and came out to see was happening. We heard gun shots and apparently it was the suspects shooting at the police, Chatikobo said.
He recalls that he then saw the robbers running to their car, which was parked near Mr Price. He estimated that they took about R7 000 and eight cellphones.
Grahamstown police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender confirmed that no one was injured in the shoot-out, and said the suspects are yet to be caught.
