The strike at Makana Brick which began last Tuesday continues this week, with workers saying they will not go back to work unless management meets their demands.

Makana branch secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers, Sandisile Che, yesterday said they had rejected a increase offer of R1.05 cents an hour over the existing wage.

Initially they said that they will increase (the hourly wage) by R1 and from that they added five cents, which we rejected, said Che.

Moses Mhlaba, regional organiser of the union, confirmed that the strike was continuing this week. "Our last meeting with the employer was last week and we rejected their offer, they are just playing tricks," said Mhlaba.

He said they were willing to reduce their demand of a R1.50 increase to the hourly rate to a reasonable amount, but the company was just playing around. Attempts to obtain comment from the company management failed.
