On Monday morning the Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, announced 60 new chairs awarded in the latest South African Research Chairs Initiative programme.
The five new chairs at Rhodes are in the Intellectualisation of African Languages; Multilingualism and Education; Insects in Sustainable Agricultural Ecosystems; Interdisciplinary Science in Land and Natural Resource Use for Sustainable Livelihoods; Critical Studies in Sexualities and Reproduction: Human and Social Dynamics and Marine Natural Products Research.
These supplement the chairs in Medicinal Chemistry and Nanotechnology (Prof Tebello Nyokong); Marine Ecosystems (Prof Christopher McQuaid); Mathematics Education (Prof Marc Schafer); Numeracy (Prof Mellony Graven) and the SKA (Square Kilometre Array) chair (Prof Oleg Smirnov).
Rhodes Vice Chancellor, Dr Saleem Badat, was thrilled that the smallest university in South Africa now holds 10 of 154 of these chairs – that each receive R2.5 million per year – to go toward staff salaries, postdoctoral fellowships, postgraduate student bursaries, research operating costs and equipment.
