The long awaited project was raised at a recent social development meeting when Social Development director, Mandisi Planga gave a progress report on projects in his department.
The original plans called for the construction of the project at the top of Bathurst Street, but this idea met with stiff resistance from members of the Commemoration Church on High Street. Last year plans were revisited to set up the terminus at the old railway station at the bottom of High Street and councillors eventually reached an agreement on this option.
The municipality has since entered into talks with Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) for permission to use the city’s old railway station as a bus terminus to serve the long distance buses. Planga said they needed to do a feasibility study to ascertain the cost of making the old railway station operational.
He said that a request has been submitted to the Cacadu District Municipality for funding to undertake a feasibility study. DA Councillor Les Reynolds said that communication with PRASA needs to be maintained so that their plans do not fall by the wayside.
