A new TV series inspired style of exercise has made an appearance on tennis courts in Grahamstown. 'Cardio tennis' is a high-energy fitness activity that combines the best features of tennis with cardiovascular exercise to deliver a full-body, calorie burning aerobic workout.

In Grahamstown cardio tennis is run by professional tennis coach, Chris Loock, who said that cardio tennis is a healthy workout for people of all ages and abilities, “as you move at your own pace.” As seen in the reality television series about weight loss italThe Biggest Loser/ital, it is about incorporating all sorts of dynamic movements between ball striking activities.

According to Loock, the sessions see one burn more calories than during normal singles play and “we cool down afterwards to flush the system of metabolic waste”. Doing stretches in the pool afterwards is also used as a way to cool down after the sessions. Cardio tennis is a social and fun class for players of all ability levels and is taught by a tennis teaching professional.

If you’ve never played tennis before it is a great way to be introduced to the sport and if you are an experienced high level tennis player it is a fun and effective way to train for tennis, Loock said. The local classes take place in groups of four and include skipping, using flexi bands, medicine ball and cone running exercises. For more information contact Chris Loock on 084 258 3956.
