Highly acclaimed South African playwright Reza de Wet passed away on the morning of 27 January at her home in Grahamstown.
Highly acclaimed South African playwright Reza de Wet passed away on the morning of 27 January at her home in Grahamstown.
She was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of blood cancer, or leukaemia, in October last year and received medical treatment locally as well as being cared for by her immediate and extended family. On 25 January she contracted pneumonia which was the ultimate cause of her death.
Her plays have been produced and performed around the world, and prizes and awards for scripts added to her reputation as the most awarded South African playwright.
She is survived by her husband Lindsay Reardon, her daughter Nina van Schoor, and her two grandchildren Max and Mairi.
To her family she is and always will be a dedicated and loving matriarch. It was her wish not to have an official funeral, so on Saturday 4 February the St Mary and All Her Angels Chapel at Rhodes University campus will be open between 2pm and 5pm for those who wish to pay their respects.
