African Connection were in sublime form over the weekend as they took an early lead in the Safa Cacadu Absa Women's league.

The first matches of the new season took place in Alexandria on Sunday, with Grahamstown's only women's soccer side, African Connection, returning home with two good wins.

In their first match, played at 12.30pm on Sunday, African Connection beat AC Milan 6-0. In their second match, just over two hours after their first game ended, African Connection were on the field again. The second match for African Connection saw them face new side in the Cacadu league, Cacadu United. This time African Connection took control of the game from the first whistle, to end 10-0 winners.

African Connection manager/coach, Chris Totobela said his side played well, but said, “It is too early to judge them.” Totobela said that considering he side was made up of over 70% of new and younger players, he was happy with their performance. Totobela said he was putting no pressure on the side, saying this season would be about taking it easy and giving the players a chance to learn, without any pressure.

Totobela said the highlight of the games was seeing two of the club stars, Zikhona Dastile and Nwabisa Tyelbooi, returning to the field of play. Dastile was out for three months, while Tyelbooi was out for six months after both were injured during last year's playoffs of the Absa league.

The two started as substitutes at both games and joined the play later in each game. They scored one goal each in the first game, and then each scored four goals in the second match.

Totobela said it was very good to see them back in action again, although they were not fully fit.

The next round of women's matches is scheduled to takes place in Bathurst on 12 February.
African Connection are on top of the log, with six points, followed by Red Stars in second with four points. AC Malan are third with three points.
