Seventeen people were injured in an accident in the early hours of Monday on the corner of Bathurst and Beaufort Streets. According to witnesses, a red Toyota Corolla and a truck collided head on and both vehicles veered into a nearby wall.

Settlers Hospital Manager, Bongiwe Moyakhe, confirmed that the injured had been admitted to the hospital. Moyakhe said three were being kept under observation while their x-rays were being reviewed and that one was waiting to be transferred to Port Elizabeth but is in a stable condition.

"The remaining have been discharged with minor scratches," she said. Coenraad Hanekom, Makana's Assistant Director at the Traffic Department said, "We were unable to talk to the drivers as they were critically injured, but we did not detect any signs of drunken driving on either of them."
