The countdown has begun to the annual Pepper Grove Pick n Pay Inter Company Night Bowls League. The event is a fun tournament on the Grahamstown Bowling Club's calendar and attracts hundreds of residents who represent their club, organisation or business teams.
The countdown has begun to the annual Pepper Grove Pick n Pay Inter Company Night Bowls League. The event is a fun tournament on the Grahamstown Bowling Club's calendar and attracts hundreds of residents who represent their club, organisation or business teams.
Many will also play bowls for the first time, while teams are allowed to have club players in the mix. Many teams take part for fun, or as a team-building event. But while participants always do have fun, the more cut-throat serious teams don't want to know the word "fun".
This year sees the 18th anniversary of the inter-company night bowls league and a total of 60 teams can be accommodated. The tournament starts on Monday 30 January and culminates in the finals and the official prize-giving ceremony on 9 March.
Games will be played under floodlights on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening for the first week and thereafter Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Neither of the top-finishing teams from last year has entered yet and organisers are hoping Stan's Transport will attempt to defend their title in the trophy event.
The 20 teams entered so far are: Proper Cleaning Services; Pheasant Pluckers; Mfuzo Boxing Camp; Carara Kick’s; Leopards; Dizzy Jones & the Plankton 4; Blooming Marvellous; Pick n Pay A; Dixie Chicks; Market Square VW; 4 Castles Taps Inc; FNB 1; FNB 2; Bad Boys; Rhodes Archery Club; GeeNet; Madhatters; East Cape Electrical and Operational Rats.
June McDougall, of the night bowls committee, said entries were still being accepted. “If you haven’t yet filled in your form, please do so as soon as possible to avoid disappointment,” McDougall said.
