The Grahamstown sporting calender gets off to a slow start in January with not much taking place on the local sporting front for the next week. A number of the highlights to look out for in January include: Schools and club cricket St Andrew's College and Kingswood College get the local cricketing fixtures underway, with St Andrew's facing Trinity House (Johannesburg) on Wednesday 11 January and Kingswood playing St George's College (Zimbabwe) the same day. The following day sees the start of the Grahamstown Schools Cricket Festival, which runs from 12 to 14 January, with 14 schools taking part. Read more about the cricket festival on the Back Page. St Andrew's then play St George's (Zimbabwe) on Monday 16 January. The Grahamstown Cricket Board's 2011/2012 league fixtures continue on 21 January with the second league teams in action. The first league teams will play their first matches of the year on 28 January. Manley Flats 1sts are top of the first league, followed by Cuylerville 1sts. In the second league, Salem are log leaders, with Manley Flats 2nds in second spot and Albany 1sts in third. Squash Kingswood College will host a Squash Training Camp for its pupils at the school from 13 to 16 January. The South African Men's National Coach, Richard Castle will run the training camp with 15 players taking part. Water polo coaching It's a hectic start for Kingswood as they also host the Kingswood Coaching Clinic from 13 to 15 January. Many schools water polo coaches from around the country will be participating. See Back Page for full report. Half-Ironman Our local triathletes are in action on Sunday 22 January when they take part in the SpecSavers Ironman 70.3 South Africa in East London.

 

These athletes continued their hectic training schedules during the festive season. Soccer leagues The South African Football Association Cacadu soccer matches resume on 21 January with Grahamstown sides, Eleven Attackers and City Pirates both playing home games. City Pirates play Black Tigers and Eleven Attackers face Young Chiefs. Both matches take place on Fiddlers Green at 1pm and 3pm respectively. The Makana Local Football Association 2011/2012 league fixtures will continue on 21 and 22 January with matches played on JD Dlepu Stadium and Fiddlers Green throughout the two days. African Connection are scheduled to continue their quest to defend the Absa Cacadu women's soccer league title when the league continues later this month. African Connection's first match is scheduled for 28 January and is expected to be a home game for the local side. The latest fixtures have not yet been released. Road Running Local runners will be in action at The Herald Flexider Friendly City Marathon in Port Elizabeth on 28 January and many will be using the run to qualify for the Two Oceans and/or Comrades.
