A Grahamstown police constable is still on duty while he awaits his trial, after allegedly raping a school girl.

The 34-year-old man appeared in the Grahamstown Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, and according to his charge sheet he has been accused of taking the girl to his house and raping her in September this year.

He was arrested in October and released on R1 000 bail on the condition that he makes no direct or indirect contact with the 15-year-old girl.

Magistrate Dion Kotze postponed the case until 15 February next year for further investigation, and said that they were still awaiting the DNA test results. Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said an internal investigation is underway, but it could be finalised before or at the same time that the criminal investigation ends.

Murder suspect abandons bail

A man who was recently arrested in connection with the death of his girlfriend abandoned his bail application in the Grahamstown Magistrate's Court yesterday. The 40-year-old man was arrested on Monday last week, after his 19-year-old girlfriend, Mbalentle Mancam, was found dead in his house two weekends ago.

Neighbours had found her body in his house when they had seen smoke coming out of the windows and went to investigate. They found a couch had been set on fire, and Mancam's body was on a bed and showed numerous stab wounds. Magistrate Nishanie Beharie postponed the case until 3 January for further investigation.
