They then took part in the play-offs, where the winner would play in the Vodacom Cup, but City Pirates did not make the cut. Last week they opened the league with a bang when they beat All Stars from Port Alfred by six goals to one.
Eleven Attackers were not as lucky in their opening league match, as they lost to Black Pirates 2-0. The two sides were also part of the Nedbank Cup knockout tournament. The first round took place a week after the opening league matches, with City Pirates winning their first match.
The game against Mighty Chiefs ended 1-1, with City Pirates going on to the second round after winning the penalty shootout 7-6. Eleven Attackers were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup after the first round, having lost to Teenagers. The match also ended in a 1-1 draw, with Teenagers winning 5-4 on penalties.
Simphiwe Faxi, Eleven Attackers' coach, believes the side lost their opening league match because they were young and inexperienced.
Due to the new Safa laws, each team needs to field a number of U17 players. Vicky Platyi, a former professional soccer player, said their loss was also due to the number of U17 players the side fields. Thobela Bhamba, City Pirates coach, said the side was working hard to defend their league title. The Cacadu matches, scheduled to take place this weekend, have been postponed due to the Bafana Bafana vs Ivory Coast match in Port Elizabeth.
