On Friday [21 Oct] Makana Executive Mayor, Zamuxolo Peter gave two local korfball players a generous send-off with a sponsorship of R3000 each, before they left to participate in the korfball world championships in China.
Peter congratulated the two players, Nomphelo Stuurman and Dinilesizwe Madikwa, who have put Grahamstown on the map by being the only players chosen from the Eastern Cape to represent the region in the world championships.
The mayor said he had to take time out of his busy schedule for the two champs. "I want to say thank-you and congratulate them. Go and represent us and be ambassadors of Eastern Cape," he said.
Korfball is a lesser-known sport in South Africa, but Stuurman described it as a combination of basketball and netball. She said that being chosen for the world championships came as a shock because she knew people who have played for much longer than she has. "I am so excited. I only started playing last year." Madikwa was equally as excited, but also nervous. "I don't know what to expect," he said.
The players left for China on Saturday and will return on Sunday, 6 November.
Stuurman's mother, Thozama Madolo, said she was so proud of her last born. "We just celebrated her 21st birthday not too long ago, and now this is even a bigger gift for her."
Madikwa's mother, Nomakhwezi, quoted Genesis 22 and encouraged her son with the words: "Even though I brought him into the world, God will take him the whole way."
"There are many families that have our last name, but my son is the first one to put that surname up there," she said.
